A Babies' Story

Some friends and I have been discussing the TLC show 'A Baby Story' for the past couple of days. Not necessarily the show that women who are 9mo pregnant should frequent, as we are all highly emotional, right?
But I've gotta say, there is something about it, something about each birth story, even the annoying mom episodes that gets me every time! Every delivering mom has their story about how 'it happened', and even though I find it totally annoying when I'm waiting for 'd-day', no two stories are the same.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009.
Much like any normal day, my mom came and took Hayden to church to because his daycare provider was helping with VBS. So, I went to work, but unlike most normal days (lately, anyway), I was very EARLY!
I've been having contractions off and on for days, and this morning was no exception. I assumed because they were low and moderate that they were probably just more of the Braxton Hicks. However today they followed some regularity. For about 2 hours, I had contractions every 6-7 minutes.....ish...I didn't time with a stop watch or anything. So I texted Jesse to let him know I had been having contractions. But when I got up to get the mail, the contractions stopped. Classic Braxton Hicks, or so I thought.
I had a lunch meeting, and they served salads. I ate one, and I liked it, but something in me wanted to eat meat. So I called Taso's and ordered a bacon cheeseburger. With fries and ranch dressing. Super healthy.
Mid afternoon, the contractions started again. Still nothing major, and didn't seem as frequent as they had in the AM. I mentioned to a friend that I thought maybe I was in the beginning stages of labor, and told her about my day, but it wasn't a huge deal.
I stayed a liiiittle late at work, thinking maybe I wouldn't be back on Wednesday. So around 5:15pm I was headed to the timeclock to leave, but I stopped in the Birthing Center first. I knew they had been pretty busy (4 moms & 4 babies), and they wanted to have a full surgery crew in case of emergency C-Section and so just to be courteous, I stopped to say 'Hey, I might be back--I need to go pack my things and come back... so, maybe don't send the full crew home'. After a little chat with the Vickie, the nurse at the front counter, she called my Doctor, who said to have me checked. Again, I texted Jesse and said 'hey, here's what's going on....I'll let you know when I know something, and I'll be home soon.' I did note to the nurse that I thought there was a chance my water was leaking. Test confirmed that this was not the case, but she proceeded to check me.
Her eyes got reallllly large..."Oh my word, girl....You are dialated to 9cm!"
(Excuse me, what now?! A NINE?! How is this even possible?!)
Call Jesse, "You need to come now...we're having babies....soon. I'm am at a 9!" Commence freaking out on all sides of the conversation.

Okay so, to recap, we're having babies...right. now. So, from what I know...from A Baby Story, I'm not getting any drugs....oh, and did I mention that I haven't packed a thing??? Right.... Not.one.thing.

So, my nurse (who was incredible), got me moved from the triage room to my labor & delivery room, and got me as situated as possible. Jesse & Hayden arrived, and Hayden got to hang out for  a few minutes until my parents came to watch him. Shortly thereafter, the dr. arrived {he was busy coaching his daughter's little league}, and we had a little time of 'hurry up and wait', while the room was transitioned to having 2 baby warmers and 2 of everything else it needed....and literally like 16 people. Birthing twins is apparently quite the spectacle. ;)

Around 6:30pm, Dr. Richmond got the show started and broke my water, which I thought would be painful, wasn't, but did create an uncomfortable mess. He said that at the next contraction I could push if I felt the need, but in all transparency, when they told me to bear down and push--the first 10 seconds I just pretended. Listen, folks,  I didn't get any drugs,...and from all I remembered from having Hayden (13 months previously--AND fully drugged) this was gonna hurt!! But a few minutes later, at 6:42pm & 6:46pm, Baby A & Baby B made their respective entrances.

'Well, that was really, really cool,' was what Dr. Richmond had to say when it was all over.

...And I'd say he was right.
